Kuba Mask

KUBA MASK
The Kuba are located in the Bulape area. Their geometrical designs in carvings and rafia weaving are well known and widely admired.  Click on the mask above for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts site, (be patient, it is slow) and then on page 5.  Click on the masks for detail.  Note the intricate cowrie shell and beadwork.

Mukenga Mask

Luba Mask
Click here or the mask above for information about LULUA (Tshikaji/Kananga area) art.  Male statues there are of great chiefs and were planted in the ground around huts to protect the household.  Female statues may be maternity figures used to protect the babies.  Squatting figures show burial form.  Horns depict power.  Read more about statues and masks on the site.
